It is one of Islam’s greatest enduring miracles, symbolizing God’s mercy. The Well of Zamzam first appeared under the feet of the Prophet Ismael 5,000 years ago, after his mother Hagar, Ibrahim’s second wife, rushed seven times between the two hills of Safa and Marwah in search of Zamzam water to save her thirsty kid.
The well’s name originates from the phrase Zome Zome, which means “stop pouring,” which Hagar repeated as she tried to retain the spring water. There are no moss, insects, fungi, or other pollutants in the water from the well. It has a higher concentration of natural minerals than desalinated water. As a result, it has a distinct, strong flavor.
Pilgrims are constantly eager to drink from the well and bring bottles filled with the water back to their homelands because, according to the Prophet Muhammad, it is a natural source of healing for the sick (peace be upon him).

According to Ibn ‘Abbaas, Allah directed Prophet Ibrahim to take his wife, Hagar, and son, Ismail, to Makkah. Makkah was a barren country at the time. The Prophet returned home after leaving his wife and son with some dates and water, as per Allah’s order. The dates and water ran out after a while on this desolate terrain. Hagar began seeking water as young Ismail began to cry from thirst.
She ran up and down the hills of Safa and Marwa seven times (that is why circumambulating the Kaaba seven times is an important ritual of Umrah and Hajj both). Ismail began kicking the ground in his anxious state. Water was streaming out of the location where Ismail was kicking.
She gathered some water for herself and began feeding it to Ismail with care. The water that sprang forth became known as Zamzam’s blessed water.
In Arabic, Zamzam water is also known as ‘Murwiya – meaning quenched’ and ‘Shabbaa – meaning satisfying.’ Zamzam water, according to the Prophet, is healthy nourishment, not merely water. It is claimed to be a cure for all illnesses and has been blessed by Allah. It is also claimed that if a person makes a wish after drinking the entire bottle of Zamzam water, his request would be granted.
