Islam emphasizes on the upkeep, welfare, and upbringing of children. It includes providing them with the basic necessities of life. Allah (SWT) says in the Quran:

“O you who believe! Ward off yourselves and your families against a Fire (Hell).”

(Tahrim 66:6)

This ayah explains the needs of training of one’s family to ward off the fire of hell. It is the duty of parents to provide their children with Islamic education and training. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“The best gift to children from parents is their correct training.” (Tirmizi)

Ramadan, the holiest of all the months, is the time to seek Allah’s blessings and forgiveness. It is also a beautiful time to train your children about Islamic rituals. Tell them the value of fasting, prayers, charity and reciting the Holy Quran in this blessed month. It is the time to imbibe in their little minds the love of Allah (SWT), His commandments and the Islamic way of life. As parents, you first ensure prayer and fasting during Ramadan and ask your kids to join you. Go to the mosque with your children and explain to them the importance of saying prayer and fasting. You can bring your children for Umrah during Ramadan.

Be a Role Model for Your Children

It is an undeniable fact that children learn from their parents more than any other source. If you spend time with your children, they feel happy and this is the right time to start their education. But the only word of mouth is not enough. Your practical inspires them more. If you’re a practicing Muslim, your children will follow suit. Mere rhetoric will not convince them.

In Muslim countries, people welcome Ramadan with a special fervor. In this scenario, children learn a lot about Ramadan. But it may not be so in non-Muslim countries. There, training of your children about Ramadan becomes more significant. It is again important for you to play as a role model for your children and develop their interest in Islam.

Think of Innovative Ideas that Interest Your Children

Children love simple, innovative and creative ideas. To develop a love of Ramadan, the parents should think of activities that interest them. Create drawings involving them to hang on window-panes, having Ramadan messages. Help them making little things copying ideas from websites. Do not force them for perfection rather encourage them for their interest.

Celebrate the Last 10 Days of Ramadan with Spiritual Fervor

The last 10 days of Ramadan are very important. The most sacred night shab-e-qadr occurs during these days. Try to make these ten days memorable by fasting, prayer, and charity. Decorate your house especially for these ten days with a spiritual glow. Burn scented candles after Maghrib in your house. Arrange Iftar for family friends. Ask your neighbors to join your family at Iftar. This will leave a good impression on your kids and ignite their interest in Ramadan.

Help the Needy

Tell your kids that Ramadan is a month of charity. Allah (SWT) likes charity and asks us to help those who do not have enough to sustain their lives. Improvise a box at home to collect coins. Ask children to contribute from their pocket money. This will help them cultivate a habit of helping others. They will also know the holy month of Ramadan asks us to be kind to all humanity. It will imbibe in them a great Islamic trait.

Read Books to Your Children about Ramadan

Read every day from a book that describes the importance and blessings of Ramadan. There are many good books available for kids. For example My First Ramadan, Ramadan and Eid al Fitr, and A Party In Ramadan. They educate children about fasting, its month-long observance, and its spiritual importance. Some books are about the good impact of fasting on human health.  This will also encourage kids to observe fasting.

Recitation of the Holy Quran

Reciting the Holy Quran ensures blessings of Allah (SWT). In Ramadan, the reward of reading the Holy Quran increases many folds. Recite the Holy Quran in the morning and evening daily. Ask your kids too to recite the Holy Quran. Listen with attention when they read. Correct them if they do any mistake. Recite translation for them too. Answer their questions if they ask you to explain anything. This is not only to enhance their interest in Islam but will also bless your family.

These are very simple and easy to do activities that will interest your kids. You can think of hundreds of such ideas by yourself. Training of your children on the way of Islam is a sacred duty of all Muslim parents. May Allah (SWT) bless us all to fulfill our duties unto our children and help them become true Muslims.
